In portraiture, I combine my love of the human face and figure with my interest in expression, emotion, personality, and meaningful details. Since I work almost entirely from photograph, I like to meet and get to know the subject if possible. Please note, list prices are "starting prices" from which each project is assessed; basic portraits include a persons head and shoulders. Including hands, full body, and/or detailed backgrounds creates more visual interest but also requires more work.
In graphite, I create an almost sculpted, monumental quality to my drawing. This feature in addition to meticulous textures and details give the impression of carved stone--the impression of permanence that so many clients feel and want to portray in their relationships. These make great engagement and wedding gifts!
For this native Virginian and graduate of VMI, I snuck the silhouette of our home state into the pattern on his camouflage uniform. One very proud and loving wife thought this candid photo from active duty showcased the Colonel, ever-cool and commanding under pressure, in his element far more than a traditional, formal military portrait. I whole heartedly agreed.
Have you ever had the perfect family photo except for that one rascal making "that face?" For this portrait, I was able to combine elements from multiple photographs to achieve a stunning, unified portrait in which everyone's true smile was captured.
I accept commissions. If you have a request beyond what's described below, feel free to contact me so we can figure out a direction for your project.
Home is more than a building. To commemorate a family home, I like to hear the owner (or former resident) describe their memories and connection to that place. Then, I visit the site and take photographs in morning or evening light. These keepsakes are especially dear to those who have moved away or whose neighborhood has experienced difficulty.
My watercolor techniques range from loose Zen landscapes to trompe l'oeil detailed realism. Calligraphy is in my wheelhouse but not my speciality. I prefer to hand-letter to the best of my ability and marry the two artworks using Adobe Photoshop.
Do you have an idea but have no idea how to make it or who to call? Most of my commissioned work started this way. If you want a functional piece or a decorative anomaly, I can draft a proposal and help you realize your vision. Painting my grandmother's portrait ON her antique iron was an interesting creative challenge for me.
